The Saddest Thing I Own

A collection of life's saddest objects, their sad stories, and our reasons for holding onto these sad things.

In 1985 my beautiful young wife and I were married. We spent our honeymoon in Fiji, some of it in a little grass hut on a remote outer island. There is a photo I took of her there. It is the saddest thing I own.

If beauty, the promise of youth, and love can be embodied in a photo – that is it. For me of course.

It was 18 years later that she divorced me. Two years ago. I still love her but she has moved on – which I have accepted.

So the picture in Fiji is the saddest thing I own.

Where’s the picture? Happiness is where the heart is. Yours should be at the promise of your new future.
