What Was Old is New Again [de Karlsruhe]

What Was Old is New Again – A Meeting of Art and Scholarship :: November 21-23, 2008 :: Symposium at the ZKM_Lecture Hall, Karlsruhe, Germany.

Every religion, political ideology, philosophy, and scientific theory embodies a set of structured beliefs. These belief systems maintain a symbiotic liaison with the arts. Throughout history, communal beliefs have relied on music, theater, painting, and dance in order to propagate accepted doctrines, and the arts in turn have shaped the articles of faith. The conference brings together artists and scholars in an unusual forum. The arts addressed deal primarily with media, the major art form that has only come to the fore in recent decades. Live Stage: Nuclear: art & radioactivity [uk London]

Nuclear: art & radioactivity – New commissions by Chris Oakley and Simon Hollington & Kypros Kyprianou :: until November 30, 2008 :: Nicholls and Clarke Building, 3-10 Shoreditch High Street, Spitalfields, London :: Nuclear Forum – November 28, 2008; 10 am – 6 pm :: The Royal Society of Arts (RSA), 8 John Adam Street, London.

Nuclear power is re-emerging as a concern for our times, both as a generator of energy and as part of a defence strategy. Today it seems to stand for the failed utopian promises of modernism and a fresh hope for a carbon-free future. The contradictions that lie at its core have provided a rich source of questioning for artists, scientists, ecologists and activists for many years. The Nuclear exhibition explores these intricacies. Live Stage: Algorithmic Art [us Adams, MA]

Algorithmic Art – A group exhibition of art works that are mathematical, computational, or generative in nature; Featuring works by: Larry Alice, Richard Harrington, Daniel Hirschman, Tristan Perich, Sean Riley, Jeremy Rotsztain, Daniel Shiffman, and Demetrie Tyler :: November 22, 2008 – January 10th 2009 :: Opening: November 22; 5:30 – 8:30 pm :: Greylock Arts, 93 Summer Street, Adams, MA.

In this group exhibit we explore the use of algorithms as an integral part of the art making process. An algorithm, or instruction set, is used by included artists as a medium through which their ideas are conveyed. The algorithm is often simply a starting point for a work that is completed by the artist, by a computer, or with the participation of the viewer.

Pervasive mass-media in the information age offers us a continuous stream of mediated realities. Countless events of varying and often questionable significance emerge as scrolling columns of headline news and then quickly fade into the soon-forgotten annals of our time. Within this saturated datascape of history, there are singular defining moments that rise above the ubiquitous monotony of the everyday. Continue reading
