Live Stage: Clothing Without Cloth [nl Rotterdam + online]

Test_Lab: Clothing Without Cloth — Material Explorations in the Field of Fashion & Technology, curated by Valérie Lamontagne, featuring: Emily Crane, Christien Meindertsma, Carole Collet, Grado Zero Espace, Pauline van Dongen, Freedom of Creation :: May 26, 2011; 8:00 – 11:00 pm :: V2_, Eendrachtsstraat 10, Rotterdam + streamed live.

Material culture in clothing and fashion has always been linked to technology — from looms to sewing machines to the processes of harvesting raw materials and transforming them into ‘cloth’. However, the concept and materiality of textile is being contested with new technical practices which subvert conventional expectations of what cloth should be. Continue reading

Live Stage: Systems/Layers Walkshop [uk London]

Systems/Layers Walkshop :: May 11, 2011; 10:00 am – 1:00 pm :: Innovation Centre, Central Saint Martins, Southampton Row, London.

Systems/Layers is a half-day ‘Walkshop’, held in two parts. The first portion of the activity is dedicated to a slow and considered walk through a reasonably dense and built-up section of the city. What we’re looking for are appearances of the networked digital in the physical, and vice versa: apertures through which the things that happen in the real world drive the ‘network weather,’ and contexts in which that weather affects … what people see, confront and are able to do. Re-Drawing Boundaries

Re-Drawing Boundaries :: Curator: Jeremy Hight :: Senior Curators: Lanfranco Aceti and Christiane Paul.

This exhibition presents key innovators in Locative Media, New Media and Mapping in a show that works to display not only fields and works but more of cross pollinations, progressions, the need to move beyond labels just like the importance of reconsidering borders on maps, what space is and what pragmatic tools and previous forms can do.

We are in an age of cartographic awareness that is arguably unprecedented, but is of a malleable map, of layered spaces, of maps in new contexts. Boundaries are not the only things that are being reconsidered on maps: mapping systems and our base sense of space. Continue reading

Artvertiser [fi Helsinki]

Artvertiser with Julian Oliver and Damian Stewart :: Workshop: May 4-6 and 10-17, 2011 @ Finnish Academy of Fine Art :: Public Presentation/Lecture: May 4 and 17-19 :: Artvertiser Walk: May 7 and 11-13 :: Helsinki, Finland.

The Artvertiser imagines a near-future where advertising in public space can be replaced by art. It is an urban, augmented-reality project, consisting of custom-made handheld binocular devices and specially designed software. The Artvertiser situates the ‘read-only’, proprietary imagery of our public spaces as a ‘read-write’ platform for the presentation of non-proprietary and critically engaging content. During the workshop, participating artists will create visual works to replace urban advertisements in Helsinki. Continue reading

ASPECT V.17: Hi-Tech

ASPECT: The Chronicle of New Media Art V.17: Hi-Tech features ten artists working at the intersection of new ideas in art and technology. Its release follows V.16: Lo-Tech, and the two function not as a timeline of emerging technologies in art, but as two poles between which most new media artists find themselves working today.

While the works in V.17 illustrate what many traditionally consider to be new media, we present the use of emerging technologies as but one vital element within the discourse of new media art. In our era of planned obsolescence and weekly technological breakthroughs, innovation is the norm. How can we move past novelty and use new technologies to ask questions about contemporary culture? The works in Volume 17 do just that. Continue reading

DEberlusconiZER: DE_ZER Vol. 1

[Image: New York Times DEberlusconiZED with Open Internet, by Aram Bartholl] DEberlusconiZER: DE_ZER Vol. 1 is a web tool that replaces the images and words related to the Italian Prime Minister. The software subverts the media machine created by one of the most controversial figures in Italian politics by reclaiming the space devoted to him and using it for new purposes.

In an unprecedented adaptation of the codes of street art and public art to the online environment, DE_ZER Vol. 1 is the first of a series of exhibitions that will each include three works and last ten days. From April 26 to May 4, 2011, these three works will alternate randomly: Pussy, by Claudia Rossini; Lavorare stanca, by Alterazioni Video; and Open Internet, by Aram Bartholl. Continue reading
