Sensing Place | Placing Sense [at Linz]

Sensing Place | Placing Sense :: September 3-4, 2011 :: afo architekturforum oberösterreich, Herbert-Bayer-Platz 1, Linz, Austria.

The mental image of the city has become more complex. Since mobile phones have become geo-social devices, location-based data is increasingly shaping the way we navigate, experience and define the urban environment. Media art practices have played an important role in shaping, investigating and problematizing this development. The Symposium and the exhibition will investigate the potential of experimental and artistic forms of inquiry for helping us making sense of the city, and discuss practices that create new public infrastructures and define new places. ISEA Istanbul presents Unsitely Aesthetics: the Reconfiguring of Public Space in Electronic Art — Chair Person: Maria Miranda; Presenters: Brandon LaBelle, Darren Tofts, Renate Ferro, Timothy Murray :: September 17, 2011; 9:00 - 10:30 am :: Sabanci Center Room 2, Sabanci Center, Levent.

This panel explores the multiple and diverse ways artists are working in public space within the context of network culture where being in two places at once, or the superimpostition of real and virtual space has become the common experience.

With the growth of the internet and mobile telephony across the globe we are witnessing new configurations of public space and public culture. Continue reading

Live Stage: Public Art of the Sustainable City [tr Istanbul]

ISEA Istanbul presents Public Art of the Sustainable City — Chair Persons: Elizabeth Monoian, Robert Ferry; Presenters: Patricia Watts, Nacho Zamora, Glen Lowry :: September 20, 2011; 9:00 - 10:30 am :: Sabanci Center Room 2, Sabanci Center, Levent.

This panel discussion will address the continuum of public art, clean energy precedents, and contemporary technologies. Within this framework we will outline and illustrate the potential that interdisciplinary teams and communities around the world have to expand both the dialogue and actual change. As we endeavor to extricate civilization from fossil fuel dependence, the existential debate over the purpose of art deserves renewed attention in the context of natural ecology and human consumption. Live Stage: Content | Form | Im-material [at Vienna]

Why is it still easier to get an entire museum collection on the Internet than to get a single work of Internet-based Art in a museum space? As with the nature of this question, both aspects have to be taken into account: the field of Internet-based Art with its characteristics and proponents, as well as the mechanisms that allow institutions to filter what the public at large understands to be art. Heath Bunting and Annet Dekker in Conversation

Conversation between Heath Bunting and Annet Dekker:

“Identity is a construction and we as human beings made it into an entity that consists of something that can possess one or more natural persons and control one or more artificial persons”. Heath Bunting explains where his passion for systems and power structures comes from.

The world of an administrative content provider. About opening spaces, connecting layers and being mobile.

For those unfamiliar with Heath Bunting’s work, it is not immediately obvious what he intends by The System. Its pages, consisting of stark black-and-white spider diagrams, give the impression of an austere post-conceptual practice, but technocratic as this aesthetic may seem, it camouflages a more wayward disposition.’ — Colin Perry on the net artist’s new book “The System,” in Art Monthly, issue 334, March 2010.
