Turbulence Commission: INTERP by Jeff Thompson

Turbulence Commission: INTERP by Jeff Thompson:

INTERP is a series of digital sculptures generated by blending 100 unrelated photographs, placing them into simulated three-dimensional space, and importing them into photogrammetry software, tricking it into thinking that the photographs were of a single object. Thompson is interested in “useless” and culturally-derived data sets, so rather than use an arbitrary archive of photographs (a Google image search for a particular term, for example), it seemed more natural to use a finite set that he had generated himself (approximately 12,000 images when he began the project in 2012). Every photograph was used. Continue reading

“Submersible” by Yotam Mann & Niv Bavarsky Commission: Submersible by Yotam Mann and Niv Bavarsky [Needs Chrome 21+ or Safari 6+ and Speakers/Headphones]:

You are at a helm of a submarine navigating the depths of the ocean. At each strata, you see and hear different organisms. In the sunny epipelagic zone, watch the fast and massive tuna swim by in schools. Or catch a glimpse of the rare sea pig in the darkness of the abyssopelagic. Each of these organisms contributes a spatialized motif to the evolving soundscape.

Submersible is a 2013 commission of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. for its Turbulence website. It was made possible with funds from the Jerome Foundation. Continue reading

Memorial Project for Jobbers’ Canyon Built with ConAgra Products

Turbulence Commission: Memorial Project for Jobbers’ Canyon Built with ConAgra Products by Nicholas O’Brien [Best viewed in Chrome, Firefox or Safari]

Memorial Project for Jobbers’ Canyon Built with ConAgra Products pays homage to lost architectural treasures. In 1989 ConAgra, the second largest agricultural distributor in the United States, began building its new corporate headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska. In the process, twenty-four buildings over six city blocks were demolished. The district, known as Jobbers’ Canyon, was listed in the National Registry of Historic Places and is considered the largest lost site on record. Using preserved records and architectural drawings O’Brien has ‘rebuilt’ ten of the buildings, substituting the original construction materials with products distributed by ConAgra. Continue reading

“Endgame: A Cold War Love Story” by Tal Halpern

Turbulence Commission: Endgame: A Cold War Love Story by Tal Halpern [Needs Adobe Flash Player]:

Endgame: A Cold War Love Story — for the web and Flash enabled touch screen devices (DROID) — is a puzzle whose pieces are culled from an archive of long forgotten propaganda. In it a story about art, exile and history takes shape from the fragmentary remains of one woman’s life.

Endgame: A Cold War Love Story is a 2011 commission of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. for its Turbulence website. It was made possible with funding from the Jerome Foundation. Continue reading
