Radius: “Millionth” by James Chinneck [sl Ljubljana + online]

Radius Episode 60: Millionth by James Chinneck :: Duel-Site Broadcast: And Sometimes Gravity, Adds Donna, 88.9-FM, Chicago, US :: February 1, 2015, 1:00 - 4:00 pm (CST) + radioCONA:Zima FM, 88.8MHz, Ljubljana, Slovenia and streaming :: February 19, 2015, 7:00 pm (CET).

Millionth was constructed by simply using a telephone and audio recording equipment. James Chinneck systematically recorded individuals saying the word “hello” when they first answered their telephone. Chinneck charted his telephonic journeys through 227 different countries, working on condensing the world’s population at a ratio of 1:1000000 to generate a total of 6348 people. Each individual “hello” has been edited into a sequence, which includes every country in descending order of population size, one after the other, resulting in a 43 minute audio track. FM-Scenario - The Listener’s Voice

FM-Scenario - The Listener’s Voice :: June 22 – August 4, 2013 :: ZKM | Center for Art and Media, Lorenzstrasse 19, 76135 Karlsruhe, Germany.

The inter-media project FM-Scenario - The Listener’s Voice uses the Internet as a production site for generating content for further media – more specifically: radio stations, exhibitions and publications. The project’s starting point comprises Eran Schaerf’s news radio plays from the years 1997 to 2011, as well as new texts. The Listener’s Voice (2002), a fictitious radio station, moderated by a computer program is exemplary of Eran Schaerf’s news radio plays. Here, Schaerf uses the newscast format in order to indicate the relativity of its objectivity claim: newscasts not only describe apparent facts, but allow such coverage to be one narrative account among many. Live Stage: Radius 26 - InharmoniCity [online]

Radius Episode 26: InharmoniCity by U.S.O. Project :: June 2, 3, 9 and 10; 12:00 pm (CST).

InharmoniCity realizes an urban symphony by using sounds normally hidden from our perception and revealed through unusual transducers.

The track Girl Running, establishes a dialogue between the sounds synthesized with Xenakis’ UPIC and the sound outputs of invisible electronic objects. By carrying these magnetic fields into the audible range, the sounds have been suspended, intimately researched, and orchestrated in order to cross the physical borders of aural perception. Xprmtal Short Wave Radio B-Side (Radius Edit)

Radius Episode 24: Xprmtal Short Wave Radio B-Side (Radius Edit) by Desh (D3SH) & Ekis (X) :: May 10, 11, 15 2012; 12:00 pm CST.

Xprmtal Short Wave Radio B-Side (Radius Edit) is a landscape of scrapheap hills, rusty heavy-duty machinery, abandoned building sites sheltering engine cults’ followers. A constant metallic buzzing interferes with encoded technical transmissions and radio spectrum “white spaces” while, high above, floats a chaos of frequencies.

Two short wave radio broadcasters establish contact through these airwaves, their dialogue sent back to the listeners of the area who are unaware of such free-form vibrations coming from their speakers. Continue reading

“Ghost Radio” by Ven Voisey

Ghost Radio is an ongoing audio collage/fm transmission project by Ven Voisey included in the 2012 deCordova Biennial. To contribute your story, call the Ghost Radio hotline: (213)4-GHOST5 (aka 213.444.6785):

“True ghost stories and paranormal experiences are gathered through individual conversations, spirit communication attempts, telephone messages, radio technology experiments, found audio clips, social media sound fragments… What I have discovered is that ghosts are everywhere, and disembodied individuals and energies seem to be present in increasing numbers. Belief systems and skepticism varies as widely as the personalities I encounter.

Ultimately the material collected is recomposed into an audio installation that drifts between experimental music composition, cut up audio docudrama, and ghost hunt. Continue reading

Radius - Range: Local, Distant, Fringe

Radius - Range: Local, Distant, Fringe is a three-part, location-based series of radio transmissions that explores the phenomenon of signal strength. The series seeks to break, bend, and highlight the economic, political, and technical dimensions of the electromagnetic spectrum.

Range uses the criteria found in proprietary mapping software that plots radio station coverage areas to analyze the importance of place for radio broadcasts. This software takes into account transmitter power, antenna height, frequency, antenna pattern, and etc. Commercial and community stations use this data to determine potential listeners. Radius 18: Imaginary Forces

Radius 18: Imaginary Forces’ CT Room (43:01) :: Continuously looped for a three hour period on December 20, 21, 27 and 28 at 4:00 pm CST.

CT Room is a collage of field recordings taken from various online video chat rooms and instant messenger services. In many of the recordings, the subjects that chose to type responses instead of speak, were unaware that they had left their computer microphones on. In some of these cases, the computer was left on even after the person had stopped chatting. Hart was able to record the sounds of these seemingly empty spaces and the personal conversations that would take place outside the designated chat space. Continue reading

Radius 17: Timo Kahlen [online]

Radius 17: Timo Kahlen’s Bits & Pieces (04:20) :: Continuously looped for a twelve hour period on December 7 and 15 at 8:00 am CST.

Bits & Pieces lures the listener into an ear-catching, evocative sonic terrain, an acoustic metaphor of current political and economic crises. At first impression Bits & Pieces seems only like a haphazard accumulation of static noise, dirt, and interference on the listener’s radio, but the radiophonic work soon turns into the precise acoustic image of a protagonist’s footsteps on a brittle, fragile, inconsistent surface: literally and conceptually walking on ‘breaking ground’, audibly de-constructing, re-evaluating, tearing, revising and editing his world.
