Comments (0) Commission: “text_ocean” by Zannah Marsh Commission: text_ocean by Zannah Marsh [Optimized for Google Chrome]:

text_ocean is an experiment in random access reading and text visualization, using Herman Melville’s notoriously impenetrable whalefishery epic Moby Dick as source material. Selections of the text are blown apart and become a dynamic sea of words, animated according to grammatical function. The user “reads” the text by ‘hooking’ and releasing words and, in the process, disconnects them from their original lines. Thus Moby Dick is slowly, randomly rewritten by the user, word by word, as she reads.

text_ocean is a 2015 commission of New Radio and Performing Arts, Inc. for its website. It was made possible with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts. Continue reading

Predicting In Augmented Space

Live Architectures: Predicting In Augmented Space by Chiara Passa:

Live Architectures is a series of digital and interactive artworks created over time in a wide-range production developed to reshape the indoor and the outdoor architecture and environmental places as well as the ‘digital environment’, transforming it into something alive and vibrant. This series of site-specific artworks is created and usable exclusively on Google Earth. Through the augmented reality technology, the artwork aims to create an extemporary-temporary virtual land-art, constructing a sort of “mise en abyme” or “droste effect”, in which an element shifts the other in depth, merging the Google earth environment with the augmented area in order to create a new space. “Awkward_NYC/Awkward_Everywhere” by Zannah Marsh

Turbulence Commission: Awkward_NYC / Awkward_Everywhere by Zannah Marsh:

“Awkward_NYC” is now “Awkward_Everywhere.” It is a collaborative online map for reporting social accidents and small interpersonal traumas that occur unexpectedly in public spaces. Anyone can add a story to the map. The map pinpoints sites in the New York Metropolitan or anywhere in the world where misunderstandings, outbursts, physical altercations, arguments between friends or strangers, and romantic spats or break-ups have occurred. It taps into the confessional, voyeuristic, narrative impulses that typify online behavior and subverts the notion of mapping as reductive, objective, and authoritative. As stories are added to the map, a series of data visualizations depicting the emotional terrain of various cities will be generated. Continue reading

Turbulence Commission: Awkward_NYC by Zannah Marsh

Turbulence Commission: Awkward_NYC by Zannah Marsh :: Participate via the website or twitter, #awkwardnyc:

Awkward_NYC, or “The New York City Map of Awkward Social Interactions in Public Spaces,” is a collaborative online map for reporting social accidents and small interpersonal traumas that occur unexpectedly in public spaces. The map pinpoints sites in the New York Metropolitan area where misunderstandings, outbursts, physical altercations, arguments between friends or strangers, and romantic spats or break-ups have occurred. These mishaps are characteristic of the human urban experience — they’re unsettling, often comic, strangely powerful mini-narratives and dramas that would otherwise go untold, but may linger in memory for months and years, as we move through the same urban landscapes, day in and day out. Interception 5: Opticon

Interception 5 by Roch Forowicz: Opticon is a visualization based on transformation of a 3D glassy solid. With its oval and organic shape, the transparent form generated many optical illusions and caustic reflections during the transformation process.

As a part of an artistic action entitled Interception 5, Opticon was illegally embedded in the CCTV monitoring system at The Fryderyk Chopin University of Music. The image from one of the CCTV cameras was intercepted, connected with the visualization and then implemented into the system again. The security guards could see the visualization overlaying the view of the monitored space on their screen. Continue reading

Hz Journal: Dynamic Performance of Nature

[DPoN showing temperatures in the low-60's, clear skies, and winds out of the south (indicated by the vertically-oriented yellow streak to the right)] Dynamic Performance of Nature: Augmenting Environmental Perception Through Social Media And Architectural Informatics by Brian W. Brush, Yong Ju Lee & Noa Younse:

Abstract: Architecture has always functioned as a mediating structure between humans and the environments in which they live; a static assemblage of semi-inert materials orchestrated, amongst other things, to temper environmental forces for human habitation. With advances in material and communications technology, architectural assemblies no longer perform as impassive boundaries separating discrete conditions of occupation between environments.
