In celebration of the conclusion of a wonderful 2010-2011 season, the Stanford Laptop Orchestra performs on Wednesday with a full-scale laptop orchestra concert. You are cordially invited to an evening of all new works for the full ensemble of humans, laptops, hemispherical speaker arrays, and crazy new instruments!

Featuring new works and performances by Linden Melvin, Nick Kruge, Hyung Suk Kim, MK Li, Chang Yea, Mike Rotondo, Ben Roth, Chris Beachy, Ben Olson, Jason Riggs, Spencer Salazar, John Granzow, Hongchan Choi, Jieun Oh and Ge Wang.

This is an open call for submission of contemporary sound art works from the area of radio art and sound art. Artists and art groups creating in the area of radio art and sound art are invited to apply with existing or new works. Selected works will be included in the exhibition Radio As An Arts Space which will be broadcast by radioCona and will appear at in situ locations in December 2011. The exhibition will at the same time occupy the radio frequencies and audio streams of international partners. The broadcast will be constituted as a gallery space with a curated exhibition delineated by the curators’ collection of selected works and featuring works selected through this open call. (more…)

Six Memos is the site-specific sound-light installation created in the Procuratie nuove’s courtyards in piazza San Marco. The Williamsburg Bridge is the radio work by Roberto PaciDalò which provides the sound for the installation. The piece travels across the Hassidic communities around Brooklyn where the daily language – spoken at any age including kids – is Yiddish. Walking through Lee Avenue or Bedford Avenue is a unique perceptional experience. The Williamsburg Bridge connects Williamsburg to the Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Within one single train station it is possible to travel in time & space. (more…)

Location-Aware App for music in the downtown D.C. Mall

gps.jpgWashington, D.C.-based band Bluebrain’s new album dropped yesterday, Friday, May 29, 2011, but not in the way one might think. It is available on iTunes, but not in MP3 form — rather as a location-aware app that only works within the stretch of park in downtown D.C. called the Mall.

“The music changes and evolves based on your chosen path within the park,” says Ryan Holladay, one half of the band. (His brother, Hays, makes up the other half of the outfit.) “To do this, the app uses the phone’s built-in GPS capabilities.” The app features a map of the Mall that shows what locations are tagged with sound.

The album, titled The National Mall, contains about three hours of music that the brothers composed while traipsing around the area. “It was certainly the most amount of exercise I’ve ever gotten while making an album,” Holladay says.

The disc will not be available for standard download as a musical piece, since it will only work when one is standing in the Mall.

Roberto Pugliese: Digital Bio-Acoustics

audiovideo_claudiomusso031.jpgRoberto Pugliese: Digital Bio-Acoustics:: An Interview for Digimag :: … Pugliese put his expertise at the disposal of artists and while doing so he managed to develop his own personal poetic experience. Sound is the protagonist of his installations and the construction of a visual universe — he is actively involved in the creation of real environments. Nature is a model both for the sound industry and for visual production. The devices for sound reproduction are arranged in space according to phytomorphic lines, the cables inhabit the walls like climbing plants and the speakers are like flowers blooming. Music composition is then engaged in synthetic circuits, relying on computational logics which manage frequencies, inputs and tracks. Sometimes the presence of nature is represented through ready-made elements, other times it is suggested or evoked by the diffusion of sound.

During the decade leading up to the first World War, composers such as Debussy, Schoenberg, Scriabin, and Stravinsky were writing music in active dialogue with the social upheavals, intellectual currents, and political events of their day, embracing the same radical spirit that inspired their colleagues in the visual arts. This gallery program highlights selections of music from 1910–18 performed by Typical Music, an ensemble comprised of New York New Music virtuosi Todd Reynolds (violin), Ashley Bathgate (cello) and Vicky Chow (piano). A talk by American composer R. Luke DuBois precedes the concert.

harv.jpgHarvestworks’ New York Electronic Arts Festival:: with exhibitions, concerts and workshops from May 27, 2010 to Sep 25, 2010 :: in collaboration with The National Park Service, River to River Festival, Trinity Wall Street, Roulette and other partners, and sponsored by Tekserve, New York’s Largest Independent Apple Store and Service Facility. The festival is a summer series of concerts, workshops, and exhibitions centered on the cutting-edge work being done at the intersection of art and technology.

For the first time the Festival will take place outside of galleries and concert halls, and will explore the geography of the island through sound and related technology, re-imagining the architecture and history of the spaces. Some of Governors Island’s public spaces will be transformed into a series of sound landscapes where the public can appreciate a new dimension to the visual and auditory environment. (more…)

Pianola City Music attempts to overcome the almost inevitable urge to program and computerize our most imaginative ideas.

A physical model of the Dutch city of Eindhoven is rolled onto a drum and attached to a piano, so that its buildings hit the piano keys in a specific rhythm and the physical pattern of the city becomes expressed into a unique sound. The cityscape Eindhoven apparently produces a quite chaotic soundscape, although this might also be influenced by the methodology of it all, of which another beautiful example includes SolarBeat.
