Blues Speaker [for James Baldwin]

Blues Speaker [for James Baldwin] — by Mendi + Keith Obadike — is a public sound art installation dedicated to writer and public intellectual James Baldwin (1924-1987). For Baldwin sound, music, and the blues in particular were sources of inspiration. The multichannel sound art work meditates on a politics of listening found at the intersection of Baldwinʼs language and the sound worlds invoked in his work. It uses the glass façade of The New School’s University Center as delivery system for the sound, turning the building itself into a speaker. The 12-hour piece is created using slow moving harmonies, melodicized language from Baldwinʼs writings, ambient recordings from the streets of Harlem, and an inventory of sounds contained in Baldwin’s story “Sonnyʼs Blues.”

"Data-Driven DJ: Distance From Home" by Brian Foo

Distance From Home: Translating four decades of global refugee movement to song by Brian Foo, is part of Data-Driven DJ, a series of music experiments that combine data, algorithms, and borrowed sounds. The goal is to explore new experiences around consuming data beyond the written and visual forms. This song was generated using refugee data from the United Nations from 1975 to 2012. The quantity, length, and pitch of the song’s instruments are controlled by the volume of refugee movement and distance traveled between their countries of origin and asylum. More here.

"Two Trains" by Data-Driven DJ aka Brian Foo

brian_foo.jpgTwo Trains: Sonification of Income Inequality on the NYC Subway by Data-Driven DJ aka Brian Foo: The goal of this song is to emulate a ride on the New York City Subway’s 2 Train through three boroughs: Brooklyn, Manhattan, and the Bronx. At any given time, the quantity and dynamics of the song’s instruments correspond to the median household income of that area. For example, as you pass through a wealthier area such as the Financial District, the instruments you hear in the song will increase in quantity, volume, and force. Stylistically, I want the song to exhibit the energy and orderly chaos of the NYC subway system itself. Continue reading

"Hibernaculum : Vortex" by Carver Audain

tumblr_inline_nfx0mjch221qzow42.jpgRadius 58: Hibernaculum : Vortex (13:44) by Carver Audain.

Hibernaculum : Vortex was inspired by the Polar Vortex experienced in the Northern Hemisphere of the United States during the winter of 2014. Comprised almost entirely of amplitude modulation (AM) radio signals and recordings of the wind captured from a point of high altitude during Hurricane Sandy, the movement within the piece reflects the character of specific recent extreme weather events from the perspective of an individual located at roughly 40° 40’ 58” N 73° 57’ 53’ W. audio_mobile_fest2014.pngLocus Sonus/e-topie Mobile Audio Fest :: October 2015 :: Aix en Provence / Marseille - France :: Call for Projects - Deadline: December 7, 2014 at midnight.

Mobile Audio Fest is a presentation of audio artworks in which mobility is central. The fest will be organized as a series of ‘rendezvous’, each specifically adapted to a piece. These RVs might be online, in the street, on the radio, in a concert hall; they might involve downloading an app, walking with headphones, sleeping out in a tent or driving in a car. The Mobile Audio Fest is presented in continuum with Locus Sonus’ research program Audio Mobility. The 2013-14 program resulted in essentially theoretical and documentary material, presented during the Locus Sonus Symposium #8 held in April 2014. Continue reading

Radius Episode 57: Amanda Gutiérrez [us Chicago, IL]

radius.jpgRadius Episode 57: Giants Are Sleeping (00:00*) by Amanda Gutiérrez :: Installation and Broadcast from Comfort Station, Logan Square, Chicago :: November 29, 2014, 7:00 - 10:00 pm (CST).

Giants Are Sleeping aims to reflect the identity, transformation, and ownership of one Chicago electrical substation. Exploring the relationship between human memory and architecture, the installation pairs an interview with Kenneth Corrigan, a bookseller who inhabited the abandoned electrical substation in 1984, with a charcoal animation that uses substation photo archives as its main reference. Drawing techniques are the vehicle to convey symbolic connections that link the historical aspects of these buildings, while the radio becomes the narrative’s voice over. Continue reading
