“Soundpockets” by HC Gilje

soundpocket3.jpgSoundpockets is a series of intimate sound interventions in public spaces. By using FM radiowaves, soundbeams and miniature speakers to create local pockets of sound, the different projects create private listening rooms, change the soundtracks of locations, and/or displace time and space.

Soundpocket 1 — created for Urban Interface, Oslo (2007) — was installed in a narrow passageway connecting two parts of the city. The soundbeam, which can be as narrow as 50 cm in diameter, was mounted on a pan/tilt head which made it possible to place the sounds very precisely in the passageway. Continue reading

Live Stage: Resonance – “Sound” [hk Hong Kong]

installationview1.jpgResonance — Exhibition/ Performance/Talks with Samson Young and Yao Chung-Han :: July 16 – September 5, 2010 :: :: Opening Reception: July 16; 7:00 – 9:00 pm (performance by Yao Chung-Han (IO Lab, Taiwan) :: I/O Gallery, U/G, Tung Yiu Commercial Building, 31A Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong.

Resonance an exhibition about the word sound. It is about the sound of the word, the meaning of the word, and the usage of the word; that is to say, it asks what sound is, how sound is used, and what sound can do. One may wonder why an artist would choose to work with sound, as opposed to music or visual art, but would find that answers are rarely forthcoming.

Resonance attempts to present an abstracted territory for this dialogue, stripping sound down to its most basic elements; the same elements that contribute to the other creative modes and methods in question. Continue reading

Reblogged Right Here, Right Now – HC Gilje’s Networks of Specificity

Posted by Mitchell Whitelaw on Teeming Void: This essay was commissioned by Hordaland Kunstsenter in Bergen, Norway, to coincide with HC Gilje’s solo exhibition blink (video below). It looks at Gilje’s recent work – which spans audiovisual installation, performance, hardware, and networked forms – through the notion of specificity (developed earlier here).

Live Stage: Locustream Audio Tardis [hk Hong Kong]

2008_hearring_1.jpgLocustream Audio Tardis — performance by Jérôme Joy :: Around Sound Festival :: April 30, 2009; 6:00 – 8:00 pm :: On the rooftop (14/F) of the Foo Tak Building, Wan Shai Hong Kong.

Locustream audio Tardis is an imaginary journey between various open mikes of the Locustream project, initiated by the Locus Sonus lab. All the sounds that are heard are transmitted live from the distant locations where volunteers taking part in the project have set up microphones which permanently stream their chosen soundscape via the web. By switching from stream to stream the audience hear the cyclical sequence which are successively played. A simple video-image showing the name of the location and of the streamer is projected during each sequence. Streams from: Marseille, Dakar, Boston, Amsterdam, Reykjavik, Solleftea, Paris, Les Lilas, Vesinet, Nice, Qu bec, Chicago, Lagos etc. Continue reading
