“SHRINE: a Torii Gate” by Benoit Maubrey

benoit_maubrey_shrine.jpgSHRINE: a Torii Gate (where the spirits are more likely to hear your prayers) opens at the Kobe Biennale, Japan on September 19, 2015. It is a public interactive sound sculpture that allows spectators to express themselves and play music and messages directly through it.

200 recycled loudspeakers are mounted on a 4 -meter high Torii Gate structure and connected together. Four people can simultaneously be connected to a 8-channel speakers system that allows them to express themselves directly via a microphone input or their smart phones with Bluetooth technology. At the same time the sculpture amplifies “recycled“ electromagnetic waves (white noise): the low-volume sounds are permanently hearable as a “background” sound that changes throughout the day: this is the “pulse” of the sculpture. Additionally SHRINE can also be used as a sound system for concerts, formal occasions and open-air events.

Blues Speaker [for James Baldwin]

Blues Speaker [for James Baldwin] — by Mendi + Keith Obadike — is a public sound art installation dedicated to writer and public intellectual James Baldwin (1924-1987). For Baldwin sound, music, and the blues in particular were sources of inspiration. The multichannel sound art work meditates on a politics of listening found at the intersection of Baldwinʼs language and the sound worlds invoked in his work. It uses the glass façade of The New School’s University Center as delivery system for the sound, turning the building itself into a speaker. The 12-hour piece is created using slow moving harmonies, melodicized language from Baldwinʼs writings, ambient recordings from the streets of Harlem, and an inventory of sounds contained in Baldwin’s story “Sonnyʼs Blues.”

Giants Are Sleeping aims to reflect the identity, transformation, and ownership of one Chicago electrical substation. Exploring the relationship between human memory and architecture, the installation pairs an interview with Kenneth Corrigan, a bookseller who inhabited the abandoned electrical substation in 1984, with a charcoal animation that uses substation photo archives as its main reference. Drawing techniques are the vehicle to convey symbolic connections that link the historical aspects of these buildings, while the radio becomes the narrative’s voice over. (more…)

From June 7-23, composer-percussionist Eli Keszler transforms Eyebeam’s Project Space with L-Carrier, a large-scale, mechanical stringed instrument that will immerse audiences in rich harmonies and sparse, multi-directional rhythms. Fluid, dynamic acoustic sounds will push and pull against the installation’s sonic control. Oorwonde is an interactive aural installation in which the visitor becomes a willing ‘patient’ to hear, feel, influence and manipulate the soundtrack of a fictitious operation. Speakers, electro-magnets, vibrator motors and piezoelectric disks entwine with the human body, creating a unique composition and performance. Based on Bernhard Leitner’s philosophy that ‘listening is understood to extend to all parts of the body and sound to touch a deep nerve’, Oorwonde explores the concept of bodily hearing as multiple elements target different body parts. A Piano Listening To Itself, inducing Chopin in chords

chopin-chord-5med.jpg“Moving across two and a half decades from the windy north Atlantic coast of Canada to the center of Warsaw, the large-scale Aeolian instruments of Gordon Monahan form a temporal bridge between the Fluxus-propelled experimental music of the sixties and seventies and contemporary sound art production. Taking the former’s deconstruction of musical heritage and combining it with an approach closely related to land art, in 1984 Gordon Monahan made his first long string installation in the snow covered plains of New Brunswick. His Long Aeolian Piano had wires 20 to 50 meters long attached to its sounding board. The wires were strung across a field so that, when exited by the wind, they produced Aeolian tones that would travel across the landscape, placing a spell on the quiet Canadian countryside. In 2010 Gordon Monahan produced a new work for the old city center of Warsaw, A Piano Listening To Itself – Chopin Chord. (more…)

Quintetto — by Quiet Ensemble — is an installation that employs the casual movement of objects or living creatures used as input for the production of sounds. The basic concept is to reveal what we call “invisible concerts” of everyday life. The vertical movements of the 5 fish in the aquariu(m) are captured by a video camera which translates (through software) their movements in digital sound signals.”
